Volcom is committed to ensuring the highest practices of animal welfare across its supply chains and is currently sourcing Down according to the Responsible Down Standard. Since 2017, 100% of the Down used in Volcom products has been certified to the RDS standard.
Striving for continuous improvement, Volcom became Scope Certified by Control Union under Textile Exchange's guidance to ensure integrity and best practices throughout our Down supply chain; this makes Volcom a "scope certified brand". Additionally, Volcom was recently a voting member on the International Working Group that was led by Textile Exchange, the owner of the Responsible Down Standard, that helped develop the latest version of the standard. The standard is driving best practices in the industry.
Textile Exchange is the owner of the Responsible Down Standard, which is now merging with the Global Traceable Down Standard (TDS). These standards are driving best practices in the industry. Volcom is a member of the Textile Exchange and is also supporting the work to enhance and improve the RDS.
ABOUT RDS
The Responsible Down Standard is an independent, voluntary global standard, which means that companies can choose to certify their products to the RDS, even if there is no legislation requiring them to do so. The RDS was developed and revised over three years, with the input of animal welfare groups, industry experts, brands and retailers. The standard recognizes the best practices in animal welfare, and excludes those that violate the animal’s well-being.
WHAT DOES “RESPONSIBLE DOWN” MEAN?
The intent and spirit of the standard is best reflected by one of Oxford Dictionary’s definitions of responsible: "morally accountable for one’s behavior." Not only farmers, but brands and supply chain members need to meet their obligations to respect the Five Freedoms of the animals that provide their down and feathers, and to meet the trust of consumers that are choosing RDS products.
